The EU extended the deadline for the temporary protection of refugees from Ukraine until March 4, 2024.

On February 19, 2025, the Bulgarian government approved a one-year extension of temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine, effective from March 4, 2025. This decision aligns with the European Commission’s extension of the Temporary Protection Directive.
Displaced persons from Ukraine who already have temporary protection in Bulgaria must complete their re-registration and renewal by April 30, 2025.

Background on the Extension
In June 2024, the EU extended temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2026. Member states were required to implement this extension according to their national laws. Bulgaria was the last EU country to finalize this decision.
Following the Council of Ministers' decision, approximately 80,000 people under temporary protection must now renew their registration cards. As of late 2024, the Ukrainian Embassy in Bulgaria reported that over 14,000 of them were employed and paying taxes in the country.
Who is Eligible for Temporary Protection?
Temporary protection is granted to:
- Ukrainian citizens who resided in Ukraine as of February 24, 2022.
- Stateless persons and third-country nationals who legally resided in Ukraine before February 24, 2022, with a valid permanent residence permit issued under Ukrainian law, and who cannot safely return to their country or region of origin.
- Family members of individuals in the above categories.
