A healthy new-born baby died of suffocation after its mother gave birth in her home in the Bulgarian village of Seliminovo on March 5. The baby would have survived if the mother had given birth in hospital, according to doctors. The mother, who is 27, did not have health insurance and decided not to go to a hospital. Under Bulgarian legislation, the woman would have been admitted, but had to pay 200 Bulgarian leva (100 Euro) for admission to hospital.

The mother is of Romani origin and has six children.
