The Bulgarian Parliament failed to elect an ombudsman for the second time this year after neither of the two candidates - Prof. Petar-Emil Mitev and Prof. Alexander Djerov - gathered more than half of the necessary votes. Prof. Mitev got the votes of 100 MPs, and Prof. Djerov - 41. In May this year parliament failed yet again to elect an ombudsman. Then too neither of the two candidates managed to get the necessary votes. Ognyan Gerdjikov, Speaker of Parliament, announced that by the end of parliament's term of office, a last attempt will be made to elect an ombudsman. According to Gerdjikov, 98 NGOs and media had supported the candidate Petar-Emil Mitev. The Bulgarian Socialist Party did not support either candidate, but by
casting empty ballots helped hinder the candidature of Petar-Emil Mitev.
The right political spectrum voiced their preferences for Alexander Djerov.
