The former officer Vasil Gospodinov, 71, was sentenced to three years in prison for the shooting of 16-year-old Georgi Simeonov from the Nadejda Roma neighbourhood in Sliven. The effective sentence was passed yesterday by the Sliven Regional Court.

On 23 January 2003 Georgi Simeonov and a group of other Roma went to the Devichkovo locality near Sliven and illegally entered Gospodinov's country house. He fired several shots with his rifle and killed Georgi Simeonov. Afterwards the colonel took the body to a neighbouring orchard and set it to fire.

Vasil Gospodinov is going to appeal the sentence.
