Eighty percent of children with disabilities do not attend school, said Kapka Panayotova, chair of the Centre for Independent Living. The reason was inaccessibility of the school buildings. According to information from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, children with disabilities are 16,635. Currently, only 4 Sofia schools are accessible to physically disabled children; three of them have an elevator, and the fourth - special equipment for teaching of children with hearing difficulties. Under a project launched in April 2004 in these and another 21 schools, the teachers will undergo special training for work with minority children, children with disabilitie and other problems. The project is funded by the British Foreign Office. |
