Obektiv magazine wins first prize for publications devoted to interethnic tolerance

The monthly magazine of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee Obektiv won first prize for printed media devoted to interethnic tolerance at the International Media Festival, held in Albena on June 1-6. The category is included in the festival programme for the first year, and it is supported by the Open Society Foundation and the Royal Netherlands Embassy's Matra Kap Programme.

Obektiv participated in the festival programme with issue no. 105 from December 2003 (in Bulgarian).

A total of sixteen publications were nominated in this category - 6 Roma publications (O Roma, Drom Dromendar, Focus, Andral, Defacto, Akana), 3 Armenian (Nie Armenzite, Erevan, Armenzi), 1 Jewish (Evreiski Vesti), 2 Aromanian (Armanli, Arumanite v Balgaria), and 3 Turkish (Deliorman, Kaynak, Sabakh).

The members of the jury, which included Georgi Lozanov, Koprinka Chervenkova and Emilia Mateina, evaluated the contribution to intercultural dialogue.

Apart from the first prize, unanimously awarded to Obektiv, the jury awarded 5 runner-up prizes for conceptual ideas, graphic design and societal importance of the issues featured in the magazine. These awards went to Andral magazine, O, Roma magazine, Evreiski Vesti newspaper, Nie Armenzite magazine, and The Balkan Aromanian Anthology.

The first prize in the category of radio programmes devoted to ethnic tolerance went to Melodia Radio (Silistra). Bulgarian National Television's Zaedno [Together] programme (directed by Maria Trayanova) won the frst prize in the TV category.
