Skinhead attacks against Roma on the rise

The Romani Baht Foundation, a domestic Roma NGO, reports about an increase of the racially motivated attacks against inhabitants of the Fakulteta Roma neighbourhood. Over the last two months, the organization has registered over 20 cases of attacks on Roma.

The offenses of usually committed by ultra nationalistic groups of youths aged 16-23. The information was received in the Foundation from the victims of the abuses.

  • On 30 April 2004, Georgi Angelov, a man of Romani origin, was brutally beaten by two men, who later cut off his ears with a razor blade. The man on his way home from work.

  • Two days later, on May 2, three young men beat 28-year-old Ilia Dimitrov, who was homeless, unconscious. They later claimed before the police that he was planning on breaking into a car.

  • Ivan Ivanov, 30, was beaten by a group of 7 assailants at a bus stop.

The Romani Baht Foundation recommended that the police enforce patrolling in the places, which are known as skinhead hangouts.
