Half of Shumen's Roma live in adobe houses |

Duma daily Every second Romani family in Shumen lives in adobe houses in miserable conditions, according to a study carried out by the Iskra Foundation in the largest Romani neighbourhood in the city. A hundred men and a hundred women aged 18-55 were surveyed. Over 60 percent of respondents stated that they live in extreme poverty. Every fourth family living in the Bjalata Prast Romani neighbourhood does not have running water. Some 85 percent of the respondents have unpaid bills for electricity, water and taxes. The survey data on the attitude of the Roma to state institutions reveal
that the respondents have the highest trust in the police - 41%, while
38% have trust in the judiciary. Sixty-seven percent of the Roma population
in the neighbourhood is unemployed. |
