Two Plovdiv defendants convicted Bulgaria at the European Court in Strasbourg. The businessman Anton Belchev and the former director of the Plovdiv branch of Biochim Bank Nikolay Hamanov convicted the country for detention by a prosecutor and not being brought before a judge or other officer exercising judicial power, reasonableness of pre-trial detention and excessive length of pre-trial detention (nearly four years in the case of Hamanov), and 7-years' duration of the court trial. "This brings the total number of Plovdiv cases for violations during pre-trial detention to 7", said attorney Mihail Ekimjiev. In spite of this, however, the violations continue. |
