Prisoner dies after beating by fellow inmate

The prisoner Lenko Latkov had died after being beaten by his fellow inmate in the Stara Zagora Prison. The two had been sharing the same cell for several months. The incident occured in the morning on 13 September.

Prison inmates reportedly alerted prison guards about the beating, but when they came Lenko Latkov, 28, was on the ground in a helpless state. According to Ivan Karushkov, prison governor, attempts to revive the man were futile. According to preliminary data he died of suffocation.

It is still unclear what caused the fight between the two men. Lenko Latkov had been detained on rape and multiple murder charges. The exact cause of death will be revealed by the post mortem.

The governor of the Stara Zagora prison announced before Darik Radio that the prison guards had acted according to the rules in thid case. An investigation has been set up.
