OSLO, 16 July 2001 - Several local organisations have criticised the Norwegian Department of Foreigners for its treatment of the Bulgarian asylum seekers arriving in the country, reports the Norwegian Aftenposten daily.

The Antiracist Centre, the Norwegian Association Against Anti-Semitism, the Rainbow Antiracist Organisation and the Monitor newspaper claim that the rights of the Bulgarian emigrants have been violated. In a joint press release, the organisations claim that the 24-hour period available for considering the asylum applications after the initial interview is insufficient. The organisations also believe that the 24-hour period does not allow for a comprehensive evaluation of each application. The period also infringes on the requirement for an individual approach to every case.
