SOFIA, 12 July 2001 - Asanova Mahala - the Roma neighbourhood in Sofia's Ljulin residential area - was demolished yesterday in order to free space for the building of a Billa supermarket in the coming months. Press reports reveal that the homes of as many as 240 Roma families have been demolished so far. Their belongings are to be found piled up on the ground.

The Ljulin municipal authorities have offered the Roma families temporary accommodation in caravans until their community flats are erected in the next two years.
