Sofia, 08 October 2009 - On 06 October 2009 Mr. Hassun Albaadj from Syria died in the Busmantsi detention center near Sofia. He was a finally rejected asylum seeker, who has been detained for deportation in November 2006 and remained in custody ever since.
He was one of the two individuals left suffering protracted detention. All the rest of the protracted detainees were released in the period from 15 May 2009 (when the Foreigners in Republic of Bulgaria Act was amended to introduce the maximum six-month period of detention) until 30 July 2009.
Mr. Albaadj was found dead in the morning of 6 October in his bed with no evidence of inflicted external injuries. The preliminary conclusion was that he died in his sleep. The final report is due after the autopsy that was appointed to investigate the causes of death within the official investigation by the Prosecutor's Office.
