The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee is an independent non-governmental organisation for the protection of human rights. The objectives of the committee are to promote respect for the human rights of every individual, to stimulate legislative reform to bring Bulgarian legislation in line with international human rights standards, to trigger public debate on human rights issues, to carry out advocacy for the protection of human rights, and to popularise and make widely available human rights instruments.

10/12/2009 - Theodora Zaharieva, founder of the Center for the Protection of Rights in Health Care was awarded the Human of the Year Award 2009 at the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee Annual awards for contribution to human rights. Tonight BBC4 will broadcast the second part of the documentary Bulgaria's Abandoned Children 15/10/2009 - Tonight, at 9 pm GMT, BBC 4 will broadcast the second part of the documentary, which in 2007 caused an international outcry because of images of child neglect, "Bulgaria's Abandoned Children". BBC's Kate Blewett revisits some of the children from her first film to see how their lives have changed beyond recognition.
